Dyslexia - Early Detectable Signs

Written by

October 8, 2012 - Did you know that 1 in 6 Canadians has dyslexia? Dyslexia is a developmental reading disorder where a child has a difficult time processing and interpreting information such as language and symbols. While dyslexia is genetically inherited, it does not have to encumber your child's future success and well-being.

Whoopi Goldberg, Governor Nelson Rockefeller, Cher, Tom Cruise, Anthony Hopkins, Steve Jobs, Walt Disney, Thomas Edison, Pablo Picasso, George Burns, Leonardo de Vinci, Magic Johnson, Sir Winston Churchill, Alexander Graham Bell, John F. Kennedy and thousands of other very successful people have dyslexia.

At the age of eight (grade 2), a child's reading skills are usually up to speed and that's when conventional methods for diagnosing dyslexia takes place. Today, studies show that it's possible to identify children as young as three who are at risk for dyslexia. "Simple visual attention tasks that ask a child to pick out certain symbols and filter relevant from irrelevant information can indicate processing problems," says Dr. Mehmet Oz.

Signs to Look For

Take the time to observe your child's behaviour. If your child consistently displays the following signs, it is important to notify your Family Physician or Paediatrician.

  • Does your child have a difficult time getting dressed, i.e. consistently putting shoes on the wrong feet and buttoning up a shirt or sweater incorrectly?
  • Does your child see colours incorrectly, i.e. states that blue is red or that green is yellow?
  • Is your child confused with the words over/under and up/down?
  • Does your child have difficulty playing games that other children in his/her same age group seem to grasp quite easily?
  • Does your child enjoy hearing stories but displays no interest in printed letters or words?
  • Is your child bright, highly intelligent, and articulate but unable to read, write, or spell at grade level?
